This next wand is made of a glass tube filled
with sea shells and it has a tiny crab inside. You can see it
below the text, zoomed in. There is a piece of chamois
wrapping the hilt and a tiny oyster shell as adornment. I picked
up the shells and the crab (don't worry, he is dried out) on the
Louisiana Gulf Coast. I used to live down there...
As a matter of fact, now most all of you will
be familiar with the area so I will tell you a little story. I lived
in Louisiana for quite a little while, beginning in 1985,
in Alexandria, where I went to LSUA, and then Lake Charles
where I attended McNeese State University. As a matter
of fact, it was in Lake Charles that I started my cancer treatment
(1993). Mom lived in Cameron and Holly Beach... It was
Cameron Louisiana, Holly Beach that Hurricane Audrey wiped out in
the 60's... they picked up, brushed off and re-built... and then
when Rita ripped through the Beaumont Texas Area, up through Lake
Charles, again, they were taken out.
Again, it is gone. The beach where this little
crab came from is gone. The town where we walked the beach is gone.
Gone, the area where the marshes used to come right
up and meet the sea... where there were alligator in the ditches
on one side of the road, and then beach and the gulf on the other.
Where you could throw your crab-nets in the
canal with the alligators or wade out into the gulf to fish. It's
a wonderful and magical place. My heart goes out to
the people there. I had special and nostalgic thoughts as
I made each of these wands, remembering where each bone or shell
came from as I picked it up and made it into something new, giving
it a new life, so to speak, so I guess it is why I am telling this
story to you all. I wanted to let you know a little bit about
how some of the treasures made their way to you. I know
this has been a TERRIFICALLY LONG story, but in light of the devastation
that has occurred in the area, it has been my tribute to the people
and beaches from which all of these wonderful items came.
